The most upscale course of the Shadow Lake and Shadow Pines ownership, Greystone is one of Rochester's premier public courses.
This is by far my favorite of the three associated courses, Shadow Lake, Shadow Pines and Greystone. The fairways are very wide, but oh, the waste areas! The greens are huge, but oh the undulations! The fourth hole is one of the hardest driving holes around, as it looks like the landing area is easy enough to reach, but the woods swallow the poor drive. A big hitter had better favor the left center here as the fairway slopes to oblivion on the right and the approach shot then must carry a deep bunker. # 5 begs you to hit the driver, but the better approach is to lay up and avoid a down hill wedge to an elevated green. The short but treacherous par 3 sixth is all carry over a large pond. The 7th is a bizarre par four that plays 2-3 clubs longer on the approach up the mountainous incline to the green. I think that it has the longest and most difficult 150-yard approach shot I have ever seen.
The back nine features another very difficult and treacherous par 4, #11. It sort of plays backwards, as it requires a long iron off the tee to the safe lay-up spot then a 3-wood over the water and up the hill to the large green. Par feels like bogey on the reachable par five 12th. The rest of the back nine features a lot of trouble to the left so leave the hook swing in the car. The par 5 sixteenth hole is about as good a par five as there is. A huge drive to the blind landing area (right of center so it funnels to the middle) will leave a shot that can get you home. You had better show some confidence here or risk one of many hazards that begin at about 150-yards from the green—including the 50-yard wide rock wall at the end of the lake that lurks all the way down the left side. The finishing hole requires a lay-up tee shot with a mid to long iron and a gut-wrenching approach over about 125 yards of water. The huge dog-bone shaped green is shared with the green on number 9. The approach shot could leave you with a putt of over 100 yards if you are not quite on target.
As for the clubhouse, there are few better in the area. The restaurant features a full dinner menus as well as bar food. The patio looks over the finishing hole. And, oh yes, there is a beverage cart.

Have played several times...a little expensive but it's worth every penny!
