My love/hate relationship with this course goes way back. The greens are maddeningly fast and difficult to hold. They added about a million sand traps a few years ago in all of the right places. Right out of the box the terror begins with a long par 5 with OB all the way down the left side. A drive that ends up in the 10th fairway is actually a good one, just play it like a dogleg. The approach shot is much longer than it looks. The 2nd hole is an evil par three over a deep valley and like #1 always seems to be into the wind.
The real fun begins with #4, long par four that produces many more doubles than pars, or bogies for that matter. It is one of three very difficult par fours that can make or break your day. The second shot is from somewhere around 150-200 yards and might even be from the convenient bunker recently added on the right side. Fun, fun, fun. The sixth hole is a dogleg right that demands a drive to the left center as jail awaits the sliced pushed tee shot. If you have the nerve, you can cut the corner of #7 and take about 75 yards of this hole by going over the driving range net. But don’t be shy and yank it left or your ball joins the 1000’s on the range.
The back nine is no easier. #10 can be stretched to over 600 yards if you play the black tees (imprinted with skull and cross bones). This course is long enough from the white tees and you will never see me play from the tips here. The twelfth hole also runs through the trees and is another that demands a tee shot in the fairway. The pond in front cannot be seen from the fairway. I always hit at least one extra club on my approach. The closing two holes are very good ones. The par 3 17th hole looks over a deep valley and the green sits on a perch above a large lake that eats anything that goes left. Ring the bell on number 18 as you clear the blind landing area and hike to the green of one of the more difficult finishing holes around.
I have had some very good rounds here and some that I would rather forget. The course hosted Woman’s US Open qualifier a couple of years ago. Bring your A game with you and keep your approaches below the hole as these lightning quick greens will drive you nuts. Most of the trouble here is on the left side of the holes so leave the hook swing in the car. The club hosts many tournaments and has a full bar and banquet facilities. The natural grass driving range is highly ranked in many golf publications.

Played last weekend and was once again not impressed. For the money there are WAY better courses. NEVER play the course after it has rained it holds water bad. I have played majority of the courses in Rochester, and for the price Webster East is not worth it in my opinion. Wayne Hills, Wild Wood, Twin Hills, those courses are worth it because they have moe character. Webster East has nice greens and is challenging from the tips thats for sure, but you don't leave there thinking you just played a great golf course.

Thanks for correcting my error about the 8th hole. And you are correct in saying that in order to cut the corner you have to be a big hitter, able to get it high and deep to clear the trees. A wise man will hit it to the corner and deal with the remaining 150-200 yards with resolve. Cutting to corner is fun, but very dangerous.

Wow, I mis-labeled #7 as well. I had better check my score card...sorry about that.

Actually it is #8 (not seven) that you can try to cut across the corner of the driving range. Unless you hit a really big ball, this is not suggested. Everyhing else in your description is right on the money. There is a marked difference in how the staff treats the customers this year. Very welcome change to a very friendly atmosphere. Service with a smile is now the rule.
